Session description
The ocean has buffered much of anthropogenic climate change by absorbing more than 90 percent of the excess heat and a large share of atmospheric CO₂. Yet this capacity comes at a cost. If global warming exceeds the Paris Agreement targets, the ocean’s physical and biogeochemical systems may cross critical and potentially irreversible thresholds. This session addresses the consequences of overshooting 1.5–2 °C warming for ocean circulation, deoxygenation, acidification, and ecosystem resilience. The session aims to connect marine, climate, and palaeoclimate communities to provide a long-term perspective on the urgency of limiting global warming to safeguard the ocean’s role in the Earth system.
