Climate adaptation refers to adjustments in ecological, social, technical, legal or economic systems in response to actual or expected climatic stimuli and their effects or impacts. It involves measures to adapt societies to current and projected future changes to climate systems, aiming to minimise damages from climate change but also to harness opportunities associated with it. Altered climate and weather systems will put increased pressure on infrastructure and the natural environment, which will require decision-makers to develop solutions and effectively implement actions to safeguard human and economic development as reflected in the SDG targets. This may include adaptation to extreme weather events, changed landscapes, and hydrological systems, through strategies across spatial scales in the fields of land use, urban planning, food systems, local governance, and finance, among others.
Adaptation perspectives are necessary to maintain development progress across regional and country contexts in the face of the global climate challenge. However, a substantial gap exists in integrating justice dimensions into diverse forms of climate adaptation. This session will explore the multifaceted aspects of climate adaptation, but also examine how adjustments in ecological, social, technical, legal, and economic systems can integrate justice dimensions.
