The Future of International Climate and Sustainability Agreements – Current Challenges and Opportunities

Time: Friday 22 May 10.30-12.00
Room: Stora hallen
Session chairs: Åsa Persson and Karin Larsdotter, KTH Climate Action Centre

Session description

In 2015, the world agreed to two historical agreements. The UN General Assembly adopted Agenda 2030, unprecedented in its ambition to drive transformation and scope with the 17 SDGs. Under the UNFCCC, parties adopted the Paris Agreement. Ten years later, prospects are bleak under both agreements to meet collective targets for 2030. Despite a groundswell of coordinated action under both agreements – with annual conferences, progress reports and stock-takes, action agendas and multi-stakeholder partnerships – implementation gaps are substantial. With recent years’ quickly changing geopolitics and economic crises, the conditions for ambitious and effective multilateralism are more difficult. In this session, we will tackle a big question: What could the future be for climate and sustainability agreements after 2030? What could be realistic and feasible options, and what could be more radical and disruptive ideas?
