The world today is highly urbanized and subject to both climate change and biodiversity loss. Urbanization is a driving force of these global changes. It is therefore pressing to build sustainable and climate-adapted cities that provide healthy living environments for their inhabitants, without compromising biodiversity conservation. Ideally, cities are planned and built to provide ecosystem services, nature’s contributions to people and societies, such as temperature and water regulation, and recreational values. But how do we build cities to respond to people’s current needs, while also securing healthy and diverse nature in cities, in order to provide long-term access to ecosystem services?
